2013 is over and now we have time to reflect upon the year that was. This means that a big topic of discussion is what should be the game of the year for 2013. The story has made headlines as Nintendo’s new 3DS handheld title, Super Mario 3D Land, hit store shelves. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) began a new campaign maligning the popular series, specifically targeting the choice of the “Tanooki Suit” present in the game. The animal rights group went as far as to link the game with videos of the Japanese raccoon dogs in real life being abused by workers. The group released this statement about the campaign:
“Tanooki may just be a suit in the game, but in real life tanuki are raccoon dogs who are skinned alive for their fur. By wearing a Tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it is OK to wear fur.”
The Role Playing genre has seen a lot of changes over the past few decades; earlier this year, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda series, which gave every gamer a reason to look back at where they started playing video games. For me, it was on an old Apple IIe with a text-based game called Eamon, and on my NES with Zelda and Final Fantasy as my starter series.
