Gears of War was a defining franchise for this generation of gaming and quickly became Microsoft’s biggest exclusive series outside of Halo, having grossed well over a billion dollars in revenue. With the Xbox One almost here, many fans have been wondering whether or not we can expect a Gears game in the next generation.
Vice-President of Microsoft Studios Phil Spencer was recently interviewed by IGN and among the many topics discussed in that interview was the future of Gears of War. Spencer said “I want to find a great Gears game, and I thought we did a good job with Judgment, but I don’t think it hit the level of quality that we saw in the previous games. I think review scores showed that, sales showed that, and I really think that we need to take a step back with Epic and think about — I won’t call it a reboot, because it’s kind of an overused term, but think about where that franchise goes and how to expand what it was.” Even though Spencer expressed clear interest in bringing Gears back “I’d love to have that conversation, I do talk to the Epic guys often,” he doesn’t see it happening anytime soon. “They’re also busy right now, I think they’ve said that Gears is kind of on the back burner for them. So I think it would be a situation when the opportunity came up at the right time it would be great to sit down with them.”
Hopefully that right time isn’t too far into the future and that together Microsoft & Epic can come up with a way to revitalize Gears of War on Xbox One.
